What is EMDR?

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a wellness based therapy that works because the eye movements causes the brain to start processing information similarly to how it does during REM sleep. This type of therapy holds the belief that all the information about traumatic experiences – your thoughts, feelings, sensations, emotions are trapped in your brain, because your brain never processed them properly. The triggers you experience unlock these unprocessed memories and are what cause anxiety and PTSD symptoms.

Similar to when you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object irritates the wound, it becomes worse and causes pain. Once the object is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help patients activate their natural healing processes.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a unique, powerful therapy that helps people recover from problems triggered by traumatic events in their lives. Traumas are part of our lives; ‘T’ traumas are life threatening events (i.e., accidents, medical procedures, earthquakes, sexual assaults etc.), ‘t’ traumas are everyday life events becoming traumatic when happens repeatedly in our lives and which were not repaired (i.e., childhood neglect, losses, bullying etc.).

Traumatic events are life experiences that are dysfunctionally and inadequately stored in the brain memory networks, so they keep disturbing. The beliefs, emotions, sensations like images, smells and body sensations of the event are ‘frozen in time’ and come back when they are triggered. The person feels ‘stuck’ in the past or worries about the future.

EMDR aims to help the brain get ‘unstuck’ and reprocess the memory properly so that it is no longer as intense. It also helps to desensitize the person to the emotional impact of the memory, so that they can think about the event without experiencing such strong feelings and body sensations. The body’s innate healing system is activated and dysfunctionally stored information evolves to a healthier direction.

How does it work?

We begin by asking the patient to recall the traumatic event while he/she also moves his/her eyes from side-to-side. The patient will hear a sound in each ear alternating, or feel a tap on each hand alternating. These side-to-side sensations seem to effectively stimulate the “stuck” processing system in the brain so that it can reprocess the information more like an ordinary memory, reducing its intensity.

EMDR therapy allows for effective, fast and multi-layered results. In typical therapy sessions, therapists usually schedule 50 to 75 minute long sessions weekly. EMDR is the only form of treatment that can be done in consecutive days to target the underline issue.

EMDR therapy is used to treat intensive issues in an intensive and effective way, shortening the time span necessary to obtain visible results. Intensive EMDR is beneficial for people that are unable to commit to the once-a-week therapy sessions due to time restraints, distance or other personal reasons.

By using EMDR as an intensive approach, the results can be reached within hours or within consecutive days. A significant amount of healing can take place as the brain is allowed time and space for the processing the trauma without interruption of a 50 minutes weekly session. This approach is time-specific, goal-driven, depth-oriented and highly concentrated.
